In today’s best companies, the days of formal attire and working past midnight are long gone in favour of comfortable clothes and flexible hours. These might sound trivial, but when your employees look forward to working instead of dreading it, your business will boom.
User experience design (UX) is a design discipline which gathers evidence through user testing to make de-risked design decisions. Normally we apply our design lens to designing interactions in software, but other times we’ll map an entire user experience (not in the digital context).
We use simple interviewing to full-fledged click through usability tests. This allows us to gather deep insights (and shocking reveals) which fundamentally effect our design.
How can that apply that to EmployeeUX?
Design has been iterating on user adoption for consumers forever, but the same principles and techniques apply to your employees. They too can feel lost and confused, just like they can when using technology.
It may not sound serious, but a poor employee experience can lead to higher turnover and thus far higher onboarding costs. Here are a few symptoms of companies that need some love:
User experience research aims to understand the whole picture – that means the experience of individuals on a daily basis up to the processes and systems which they work within. The key to our success is understanding people, that’s what we’re good at. Like in all things, we can’t begin to design solutions until we understand the constraints.
We gather insight from an array of sources, from user interviews, observational research and any other sources which might clue us into cultural dynamics.
This phase is typically a longer duration, as culture change takes time. We’ll agree upon what setup works the best for you. Maybe we stick around and help with the process or provide training to your HR team so they can iterate independently.
Since the design process has included your employees and management teams in a meaningful way, everyone will be more aligned and committed to change. The shared sense of excitement for the future of the company will motivate and drive us forward.

Do you have a recruitment problem?
Businesses don’t just compete for marketshare, they compete for the best and brightest to make their business thrive. You stand to lose huge amounts of value creation because you have the wrong people, or the right people don’t stick around.
Do you have an onboarding problem?
Once you’ve attracted a star hire, what’s their first week look like? Do they feel like they’re fending for themselves? Chasing down a computer, trying to figure out who is who?
